A Miracle

Have you ever been in a car accident? If not, good luck to you, and please do not have one. See what happened to me a month ago, and I said it is a miracle because I am still alive to tell you the story........

It was my first trip to Mondul Kiri, a province in northeast Cambodia, for work. I was reading newspaper after having a long chat with my colleague who was sitting next to me. Suddenly, I felt as if the car shifting to the left. I was thinking that perhaps the driver tried to get away from something on the road. But all of a sudden, my colleague screamed calling the name of the dirver: "Sophal, what's happening?" No one can answer this question, the only thing that I knew at that time was that the car was rolling over and over and over and over. After one flip, I started to realize that I was in an accident, but I was still conscious, I asked myself whether the next flip I was still conscious or what was going to happen... whether I would get seriously injured.

It was a big shock. I thank every finest thing in the world that saved my life. Perhaps my mother who passed away over two years ago protected me from all the danger. And perhaps Lord Buddha also protected me as a day before my travel, I went with my friend, Nina, to pray to the Buddha in front of the Royal Palace (Preah Ang Dong Kael).

I am very glad that I was safe, and I did not get injured. Even though I got some small bruises here and there, it is not a big deal at all. All the pain disappeared after a few days. And the good thing is that I went for a CT scan (scanning my head), and the result was good. My head is basically normal.

While in the accident, I was thinking "oh, my god, am I gonna still be alive in the next flip??" After about 3 or 4 flips, the movement of the car stopped, and I found myself still conscious. I looked around to see if my colleague was OK, and we asked each other if we were OK, and yes we all were OK. At that time, a convoy of the Cambodian Red Cross trucks from Mondul Kiri arrived and they stopped to help us. Well, the accident happened at a place called O' Raing -- only about 20 miinutes further to get to the provincial town. The Red Cross people broke the windshield for us to come out of the car. I quickly took my camera out of my bag, got out of the car throught the windshield, and took a few shots of the car. People who came to help checked my head to see if I have any injury... but again... no major injury, and not even bruises as at that time the bruises did not show up yet. The Red Cross Truck helped push the car to the right position, and we called poeple at the provincial town. The Provincial Local Administration Unit sent a car to transport us to the provincial town. At that night, I could not sleep well because of all the shock that I went through -- sometimes, I felt as if I was floating, and other time, my body was shaking. It was real shock!

However, the next morning, we conducted a meeting as planned. After the meeting, we rested the whole afternoon. I asked my boss to send a car from Phnom Penh to take us back home. Saturday morning, we started our journey home and we reached home at 7:00 p.m. We should have arrived home at around 4:00 p.m., but because we asked the driver to drive slowly, and that was why it took us longer to get home.

We arrived home safely. I rested the whole day on Sunday, and I came back to work as usual on Monday. I could have taken some days off, but I don't think I need it as it would be even more boring to stay home alone.

I sent news to my brother who stays and works in New York about the accident a week later, and told him that I was fiine. But he did not seem to believe me that I was fine. He asked me to take a few photos of myself and send to him, which I did. I think it was unbelievable to him that I was OK given the condition of the car which he saw on the photos.

My twelve-year-old niece was shocked to see the picture of the car. She wrote me a long email (she had never done that before) with so many repetitions that she was so glad to know that I was safe. Below is what she wrote... (Please note she invented her own innovative way of greeting her aunt, which no one could understand what Mak Meaw means)
